Pitcher steps up the plate. Batter gets ready. A silence falls over the crowd. We wait. Matt and Carl pick up their beers. It's tense. It's time for refreshment. Pitcher throws. Batter swings.
The ball hits the edge of the bat, flies high up, up, up, over the foul net, up, up, up, down, down, down. The crowd looks up. Carl and Matt look up. The ball is coming toward them. They put their beers down. Carl moves into position. The ball is coming directly at him. He steadies himself and moves his hands in front of him ready for the catch. Here it comes, here it comes ... hang on, a fat hand reaches out from the row in front. Here it comes ... a chubby finger stretches in front of Carl's hands. Here it comes ... BOOM.
The ball hits the chubby finger and ricochets off. It bounces forward and ends up in the hands of a guy a couple of rows down. Carl stares at his empty hands, a look of bewilderment on his face. Then recognition, then anger. He glowers at the man with the chubby fingers. And then it starts.
"Get a glove, get a glove, get a glove," they chant. Oh yes, it could have been the perfect catch.
