Back in the hammock ...

... after a tough and unsuccessful morning hunting for anacondas in the hot smelly swamps of the pampas. Those slimy little suckers are not easy to find. We sloshed around in the heat for a couple of hours, battling mosquitos as big as birds and trying desperately not to fall face first into the mud. And we found nothing. Not even a little squiggly line in the mud. Nada.

Happy anaconda hunting!

We're beginning to wonder if we're going about this the wrong way. After spending two hours searching the swamps for alligators last night, we woke up to find ourselves virtually surrounded by giant lizards. A massive alligator lurked in the water near the toilets. Another sat next to the kitchen steps, hoping for some food. After breakfast, we found one lying ominously under our cabin, while another watched while we brushed our teeth.

Pedro the alligator under our cabin

The moral of the story: don't go after the animals, let the animals come to you. If we're lucky, it'll be an anaconda joining us for coffee in the morning ... or maybe we'll find one curled up in a hammock for an afternoon siesta. Speaking of afternoon siestas, is it that time already?
